6 rules for successful German language learning

What to look for when choosing a language teacher or language school

1. Vocabulary development

If we are talking about the basic requirement for learning German, the vocabulary and its development, it is worth starting with the most important question. What is the significance of vocabulary? Vocabulary is the most common set of words known to a person. Here, however, vocabulary is divided into 2 categories: active vocabulary and passive vocabulary. Active vocabulary is the vocabulary you speak. These are the words, that first come to your mind while speaking. Also these are the words that you should dare and use and thanks to them you will be able to speak more efficiently. Their is always fewer of them than in passive vocabulary. Passive vocabulary is the network of words you understand, but maybe not all of them you use while speaking. A basic requirement is the continuous development of active vocabulary within the framework of German language learning. Without an active vocabulary, you can know the rules of the German language perfectly, you can understand everything, but you will be limited because you cannot speak.

OUR TIP: You should co-work only with a teacher or language school, where German is actively spoken to you and where you are constantly “encouraged” to expand and use your active vocabulary.

2. Use grammatically correct words in different sentences

The vocabulary itself is just a collection of data in the brain. However it often happens that we we dont use this date when we speak. For example, you are pobably able to speak with 10-15 words, which means you can introduce yourself with 3-5 sentences. In this case the codes, the words, are put together into sentences, into system which you use, you send the message across and convey the meaning. It is very important that you do not get embarrassed by adding new words until the words you have already mastered have become automated. You cannot continue to build until the first level of your knowledge is stable.

OUR TIP: You should co-work only with a teacher or language school, who can show you there strategy. So you know exactly when you will incorporate which words into your active vocabulary and what life situations you will associate them with. Also note that this strategy includes practicing the rules of the German language in real-life situations with words that have already been mastered. Remember: you should use all of this while speaking, not on paper, completing exercises!

3. Grammatically correct use of acquired words in different life situations

As your active vocabulary expands and you can use words with confidence in more and more sentences, the opportunity to use sentences in different life situations becomes more and more evident. Example: A person, who has an active vocabulary, 500 words, is able to present himself and his family in an excellent way, is able to buy all the food and present his place of residence and daily program. You can talk about the weather, but all of this only in present. The time has come to use this knowledge in new life situations, that is, to learn to say this in the past and in the future, to open new doors, and to speak boldly about your past and future later.

OUR TIP: You should co-work only with a teacher or language school, who can track what you know, what life situations you can handle, who guides you through the grammar rules by continuously expanding your active vocabulary with speech exercises thanks to his strategy.

4. Automatization achieved through regular practice

Once the words and collocations are incorporated into the active vocabulary, you can change the words more and more confidently in sentences and reach the level of automatization. Than you no longer have to think about the right form because it comes automatically. In order to reach this level, regular practice, repetition, daily / weekly speaking in German are essential.

OUR TIP: You should co-work only with a teacher or language school, who pushes you in the direction of automatization during speech exercises and who does not expect you to know the grammatical rule by heart, but to use it correctly when speaking. Co-work with an expert, who will lead you to automatization by continuous repetition.

5. Different variations of automated knowledge

When learning German and reaching the level of automated knowledge, either at A1 or B2 level, it becomes important to incorporate different variations of automated knowledge. Even though learning German may stop a bit, the expansion of the active vocabulary stops, but the acquired knowledge is repeated over and over again in different variations. As a result, confidence increases and knowledge deepens.

OUR TIP: You should co-work only with a teacher or language school, who will pre-plan and re-install this section so that you can move forward again with sure steps.

6. Regular use of language, i.e. practice

Language, as already mentioned, is a code in the brain that needs to be regularly revived and used to practice. Even the native language, i.e. the first code, can weaken, wear out, distort when not in use. An important part of learning German is regular use, so that the knowledge is at least maintained even if it is no longer developing.

OUR TIP: You should co-work only with a teacher or language school, who will provide useful advice on how to retain the acquired knowledge upon completion of his work.
